Merchant cogs became medieval warships

Both fleets relied mainly on merchant vessels converted to carry soldiers, archers, and boarding parties.

Notes

The English and French forces were not standing battle fleets in the later sense. Most ships were converted merchant vessels, although some French, Castilian, and Genoese craft had stronger galley traditions. Edward III and de Clinton nevertheless assembled a capable fleet through finance, parliamentary bargaining, merchant shipping, and experienced sailing masters. The result was a temporary war fleet created through political bargaining and maritime expertise rather than permanent naval organization.
