Chapter · 59:00-1:01:48

A Mediterranean victory frees a battlecruiser for Coronel

Destroying Goeben could release the Mediterranean battlecruisers in time to reinforce the South Atlantic before Coronel and reshape the later Falklands campaign.

Notes

With the principal German threat removed, four British battlecruisers would become available for other duties in August. At least one could be sent south before the November Battle of Coronel, perhaps under Troubridge after his Mediterranean success. Its presence alongside the British South Atlantic force would make Maximilian von Spee's historical victory much less likely. Instead of concentrating for the Falklands, the German squadron might break into individual raiders that British or Japanese hunting groups could isolate. A local Mediterranean success could therefore prevent both the defeat at Coronel and the need for the later Battle of the Falkland Islands.
