Victory could steady a divided Admiralty

An early success over Goeben could preserve careers, reduce factional recrimination, and give Prince Louis of Battenberg more political room to lead the wartime Admiralty.

Notes

A victory would reward more than Beatty's tactical aggression. Milne could claim credit for dividing his force, Troubridge could be promoted for effective support, and the courts and blame that followed the historical escape might never occur. Wartime success normally pulls naval factions together, while Goeben's escape and the later defeat at Coronel helped prolong internal conflict. A celebrated August victory might therefore strengthen Churchill and buy Battenberg valuable political time before his historical resignation in October.
