The Mediterranean Fleet as an imperial response force

The Mediterranean Fleet combined access to support from Britain with reach toward eastern crises, while its ships watched Italian fleet exercises.

Notes

The Mediterranean Fleet's position made it a central British response force. It could receive support from home while remaining far enough forward to react to crises in the Near East, Middle East, or Far East. That combination of access to support and reach helps explain the Royal Navy's substantial presence in the Mediterranean. Its ships could observe Regia Marina exercises and assess how Italian scout cruisers gathered information and supported the fleet. British interest in Italian large destroyers therefore rested on opportunities to watch their operational use.
