Chapter · 58:27-1:00:56

Suez, Gibraltar, and the race to mobilise reserves

British commanders would seek to close Mediterranean exits and prevent French and Russian forces moving east while reserves assemble.

Notes

In the scenario, Beresford can command forces near home despite his disagreements with Fisher. The Mediterranean commander faces the immediate task of securing Suez and denying enemy passage through Gibraltar. A move towards Suez is the proposed opening most likely to produce a fleet action. Ships from home would reinforce Gibraltar while reserve mobilisation expands the available force. Both sides would race to make ships ready, and even Britain's efficient reserve system would face limits on how quickly it could act.
