German losses could release British capital ships for the Mediterranean

Removing the German battlecruiser threat could release Royal Navy battleships for the Mediterranean and change Mussolini's calculation about entering the war.

Notes

Without Scharnhorst and Gneisenau at sea, fewer British capital ships need to remain in the North Atlantic while Bismarck and Tirpitz are still unavailable. Nelson, Rodney, modernized Queen Elizabeth-class ships, or even later King George V-class units could reinforce the Mediterranean instead. A visibly stronger British concentration might alter Mussolini's willingness to commit the Regia Marina, although that political outcome remains uncertain. If the wider war remained closer to history, the rebuilt cruisers could still serve as carrier and Force H escorts because their destroyer-caliber battery and high speed would strengthen a scarce destroyer screen.
