Mediterranean target profiles rewarded concentrated 40 mm fire

Italian high-level and torpedo bombers often entered the engagement conditions where the Pom-Pom's dense short-range fire could disrupt aim or punish a low approach.

Notes

The Mediterranean presented a mixture of Junkers Ju 87 dive bombers, Italian tri-motor aircraft, high-level bombers, and torpedo attacks. Pom-Pom fire could force high-level aircraft to remain higher and therefore less accurate. Torpedo bombers had to approach within ranges where concentrated 40 mm fire could become lethal. Weapon value therefore depended on the target profile and engagement geometry rather than one universal ranking.
