Timing cavalry divisions and reserves at Lewes

Simon de Montfort's victory at Lewes illustrates the value of ground, surprise, and a reserve committed at the right moment.

Notes

Medieval cavalry tactics could involve more than a single mass charge. Some commanders divided their men-at-arms into three battles or divisions and timed successive attacks. Montgomery credits Simon de Montfort's victory over Henry III at Lewes in 1264 to well-chosen ground, surprise, and the use of a reserve at the right time and place. Light cavalry performed skirmishing and reconnaissance, although it had no integral place in the tactical system described here.
