Maya refines Japan's Aegis destroyers but leaves little maintenance margin

Maya represents a refined third generation of Japanese Aegis destroyers, while the two-ship build raises questions about spares, maintenance, and separate ballistic-missile-defence vessels.

Notes

Maya is the mature third generation of Japan's large Aegis destroyer line, incorporating experience from Kongo and Atago. The class completes the shift away from older Tartar-equipped guided-missile destroyers toward Standard-missile capability. Building four Atagos and four Mayas instead of two of each would have produced twelve high-end destroyers in all, enough for three per escort group. Two could remain operational while the third covered maintenance, improving force generation within each group. The counterfactual asks whether a larger escort pool would have changed the perceived need to move from Aegis Ashore to separate Aegis System Equipped Vessels for ballistic-missile defence.
