Invincible sensors and submarine defence

Invincible's radar and sonar fit reflects the Royal Navy's concern about submarine attack.

Notes

Invincible's sensors include Type 1022 air-search radar, Type 996 radar, navigation radar and Type 909 fire control for Sea Dart. Type 2016 sonar places submarine detection alongside the carrier's air and surface surveillance functions. The Royal Navy's persistent concern about underwater threats is traced to the loss of Aboukir, Cressy and Hogue. The Queen Elizabeth class lacks hull-mounted sonar but carries torpedo decoys. Those decoys suggest that it probably also has systems listening for incoming threats, although the detection fit remains uncertain here.
