Invincible's armament included the original Sea Dart missile system, two 20 mm guns and three Phalanx or Goalkeeper close-in weapon systems. Goalkeeper is the preferred system in this assessment for its capabilities during the period when it was fitted. Phalanx's wider use and continuing upgrades made it the cheaper, more efficient option. The preference for Goalkeeper also rests on a theory: a less common system could attract fewer countermeasures tailored to its particular performance.

Goalkeeper's capabilities and Phalanx's wider adoption create different reasons to favour each close-in defence system.
