Antonio López de Santa Anna returned from retirement to fight the French at Veracruz. Grapeshot wounded his leg while he commanded a rear guard, leading to amputation and a burial of the leg with military honors. He subsequently returned to political power. Mexico eventually accepted the 600,000-peso demand and trade commitments. Continued nonpayment helped bring renewed intervention, while France and Mexico did not finally renounce their claims relating to the wars until 1880.
