Spanish dynastic ambitions and British withdrawal

Disagreement over an Austrian monarch helped separate Spanish aims from France's, while Britain accepted its financial settlement.

Notes

Spanish officials differed over abandoning the intervention in a former colony. The officer in Cuba opposed Prim's withdrawal because he saw an opportunity to retake Mexico. Installing an Austrian monarch also conflicted with Spanish dynastic preferences: Isabella II had wanted a relative of her own to receive the Mexican crown. Britain considered its financial objective satisfied and withdrew an expedition described as 700 troops and a couple of ships. France continued after both partners departed.
