Matthew Wright's study of the battlecruiser HMS New Zealand offers an accessible route into the ship's history. It covers the vessel before and during World War I, together with the stories and myths that accumulated around her. The illustrations add another reason to open the book beyond its narrative account. A later comment about the captain wearing protective Maori clothing shows the kind of shipboard tradition that makes New Zealand's story distinctive.
