The Matilda II shows why wartime industry keeps building equipment that is capable and already available. Its suspension, engine, and construction method were less important than the fact that the tank was effective enough and already in production. The Valentine and Archer later carried useful design and manufacturing logic forward instead of discarding it. In wartime, that continuity can deliver more combat power than stopping an established line while a theoretically better replacement is created.

Why the Matilda remained worth producing
A capable tank already on the production line could be developed more quickly than an entirely new design family.
