Maginot, Siegfried and Jersey: fixed defences and exposed guns

The Maginot and Siegfried lines lead into a critical assessment of Jersey's fortifications, their logistical demands and the protection available to their weapons.

Notes

The Maginot and Siegfried lines face one another, with both France and Germany investing heavily in bunkers and fortifications. Jersey's fortifications offer a separate example: their siting earns praise, while their immobility and logistical demands draw criticism. The preferred gun arrangement would allow the weapons to lower into protection from air attack. Some mortar positions could fire from cover and receive a more favourable assessment. Others did not appear to offer that protection, so the judgment depends on the individual emplacement.
