Why simple spare parts can need complex supply chains

A rubber mallet becomes a small but revealing example of the many feedstocks, tools, and decisions hidden behind local manufacturing claims.

Notes

An ordinary rubber mallet tests the promise that a colony can simply print whatever it needs. Reproducing the tool could require about five different materials, each of which must be carried, stored, or manufactured. A metal hammer is easier to source, but it can damage prefabricated components that need gentle adjustment after transport and temperature changes. Local manufacturing does not eliminate logistics; it changes the inventory from finished tools to raw materials, machine capacity, and production knowledge. Colonists must decide which low-mass tools are cheaper and safer to bring from Earth than to reproduce locally.
