Chapter ยท 6:22-7:24

Match a ship's name to the task it must perform

A disputed name should be judged against the vessel's expected employment and the associations it carries.

Notes

A disputed name should be tested against the vessel's expected role. Campbeltown may make sense if a Type 31 spends much of its time with an amphibious task group as an air-defence frigate. The earlier ship's destruction during an amphibious operation gives the name relevant operational heritage, although naming a new vessel after a ship that blew itself up carries an awkward association. The case shows how mission, inherited history, and public interpretation shape whether a name feels suitable.
