Question

What is your favourite naval rank name that is no longer in service?

Short answer

Master and Commander; the older title has been shortened to Commander.

Notes

Master and Commander is both a good position and a satisfying historical title. Modern usage shortens the officer's rank to commander. The exchange offers a preference rather than a broader history of the grade. Its value is the direct comparison between the old and modern forms.
