How realistic is the Master and Commander series?

It captures much of the period well, although dramatic fiction naturally heightens action and conflict.

The series makes a serious attempt at its setting. Its need to tell an engaging story can amplify the dramatic aspects of naval life, including coercion and danger. Historical fiction can therefore be convincing in texture while remaining selective in emphasis. Its depiction of the press gang should be read with that limitation in mind.
