Why S-class mass production mattered in wartime

The S class won wartime orders through conventional construction, reproducibility, and useful performance across many roles.

Notes

The T class was larger and the U class demanded specialized shaping, whereas the more conventional S class was easier to distribute across wartime production capacity. The Royal Navy ordered twenty in 1940 and placed double-digit orders in three successive years. Its value came from being good enough across many missions and available in useful numbers rather than leading every performance category. Aggregate wartime effectiveness depends on context, production, and fleet balance as well as peak specifications.
