Mary Lindell visited London for MI9 training in July 1942 and returned to France by Lysander that October to resume the Marie-Claire escape line's work. A car struck her bicycle in December, leaving her badly injured. Still bandaged and with her arm in a sling, she collected Hasler and Sparks on 18 December after their hundred-mile journey inland. She moved them from a hotel to a local farm, where they remained for eighteen days. During that time she arranged guides to take them on foot across the Pyrenees into Spain. The survivors' return depended on an established escape network and Lindell's ability to organize help while recovering from her injuries.
