Why Britain preferred French ships at Martinique

Martinique’s remoteness made it a more acceptable destination for French warships because it placed them farther from German reach.

Notes

Britain repeatedly treated Martinique as an acceptable destination for French naval forces after the armistice. The Caribbean base held relatively few forces and remained an issue, but its distance reduced the immediate danger of German access. Martinique had been proposed for ships at Mers-el-Kébir, and Britain would also have preferred Dakar’s forces concentrated there. Britain did not need to seize every French ship if the fleet could be moved beyond plausible German control.
