Marius Kimmel and the killing of prisoners

The story of Kimmel's submariner son adds a severe personal cost to the family's Pacific War experience.

Notes

Kimmel's son Marius commanded a submarine and died during the Pacific War. After the boat was apparently lost to a mine, some crewmen reached or approached an island and tried to contact guerrillas. A Japanese patrol captured them and took them to a base. Following an air raid, the prisoners were forced into a pit, covered with fuel, and burned alive, making the family's wartime loss part of a wider history of prisoner abuse.
