Matching a wreck-survey project to its research deadline

A proposed study of about a dozen wrecks illustrates how ship time and survey requirements can exceed a dissertation schedule.

Notes

Clarke recalls helping a student whose proposed research would have required hiring a ship and conducting six to twelve months of deep-sea marine archaeology. About a dozen wrecks would need full 3D scans, printed models, and detailed examination. The survey data would then have to be prepared and interpreted. A dissertation due on 30 September could not accommodate that programme, however promising the idea itself was.
