An underwater torpedo shot worked out by hand

The British submerged-submarine attack relied on officers checking a firing solution in their heads, while the intercepted boat was carrying technology to Japan.

Notes

The exceptional British submerged-submarine attack depended on calculations made by the commanding officer and weapons officers, who checked each other's work. Homing torpedoes were rare and entering British and American service near the end of the war, but the attack discussed here is understood to have used a manually calculated shot. The officers therefore had to solve the firing problem without relying on a torpedo to find its own target. The target was carrying technology to Japan, adding a wider wartime consequence to the successful interception.
