Manta and Moray as an uncrewed submarine force

The Manta test vehicle and Moray concept show a path toward extra-large uncrewed undersea vehicles that supplement nuclear submarines without reopening the SSK debate.

Notes

The visual discussion identifies Manta as an early test bed and Moray as the more operationally ambitious follow-on. The XL-UUV offers a politically and institutionally attractive way for a nuclear-submarine navy to regain some conventional-submarine-like capacity without creating a separate manned SSK fleet. The vehicles may resemble small submarines, but their defining feature is uncrewed operation and the missions enabled by a much larger autonomous undersea platform. A later answer says ship or submarine deployment is contemplated, while leaving the launch arrangement at the conceptual stage.
