Managing the 1905 transition with training cruisers

The Navy kept cadet recruitment moving by completing the old course aboard cruisers while the new Dartmouth system began ashore.

Notes

The purpose-built college, designed by Sir Aston Webb and built by Higgs and Hill, was completed in 1905, but the Navy could not suspend officer recruitment for two years while the system changed. Cadets already following the old course embarked in two cruisers based at Bermuda. The last old-system entrants also studied at Dartmouth beside cadets arriving from Osborne wherever their courses could be combined. Running both systems together preserved training continuity and partly answered fears that moving ashore would eliminate experience at sea.
