HMS Upholder leads the boat-by-boat tally with 21 vessels and more than 128,000 tons, followed by Urge, Utmost, Unbeaten, Upright, Unique, Una, the Polish boat Sokół, and several numbered submarines. Their targets included destroyers, submarines, transports, tankers, schooners, a salvage tug, and even a floating dock. Malta put the 10th Flotilla close to traffic supporting North Africa, so comparatively short-range boats could return repeatedly to the same strategic problem. Several boats sank many times their own displacement, an imperfect but vivid measure of the return on a compact undersea force. Forward basing multiplied the effect of a modest force.
