The Nile campaign leads to the Malta convoy battle

The campaign's later Malta convoy action killed Jean-Baptiste Perrée, a French officer judged better suited than Villeneuve to lead an allied fleet.

Notes

The campaign led to the Battle of the Malta Convoy in February 1800. The French effort to resupply Malta brought Jean-Baptiste Perrée into action against Nelson. Perrée was killed, depriving France of an officer compared with Collingwood for his ability to lead an allied force. Villeneuve later filled a role for which Perrée might have been substantially better prepared.
