Why a Soviet carrier program could revive the Malta class

The Red Fleet alternate-history scenario uses Soviet capital-ship construction and British shipyard employment to explain a renewed Malta-class carrier program.

Notes

In the Red Fleet alternate-history timeline, a Soviet carrier and capital-ship program creates a reason to restart the Malta class. The British decision is also framed as a measure to preserve shipyard jobs. Graf Zeppelin's technical shortcomings would not remove the political effect of an opponent possessing a carrier, because further carrier construction could follow. Six hypothetical Soviet Stalingrads supply another motive when Britain has only Vanguard to answer them. The example shows how an external threat can justify finishing ships that peacetime planners would otherwise postpone while absorbing wartime experience.
