Malta gives Napoleon a base but exposes his route

The French seizure of Malta supplied the expedition, but a treasure-laden dispatch vessel was captured and gave the Royal Navy valuable intelligence.

Notes

Napoleon demanded entry to Malta for more ships than the Knights Hospitaller's two-ship limit allowed. French members of the order refused to fight him, and the island was overwhelmed. The victory produced treasure and a forward position, yet the frigate sent back with the news was captured by the Royal Navy. The captured dispatch gave the British intelligence about French movements. Capturing an island base did not secure the sea route needed to connect it with Toulon.
