Many histories treat Malta mainly as a besieged garrison and the Mediterranean mainly as a land campaign. Yet submarines, destroyers and aircraft from the island repeatedly attacked Italian and German supply lines to North Africa. Malta remained an offensive base even while it was under attack. Those operations belong inside the story of the desert campaign because they reduced what the Axis could deliver to its armies.
