Economic warfare could weaken an army without first destroying it in battle. From Malta, Force K turned sea denial into a land-campaign advantage by attacking the maritime route on which Axis forces depended. Fuel shortages reduced mobility, missing spare parts immobilized complex vehicles, and insufficient food and ammunition weakened both men and morale. Capturing the exhausted Axis army in North Africa would also remove experienced officers, non-commissioned officers, troops, and equipment, multiplying the value of the naval interdiction campaign.
