Why capable units in Malaya still failed as a larger force

Good companies and battalions could not compensate for weak brigade and divisional coordination or for experienced leaders being committed elsewhere.

Notes

Not every formation in Malaya was tactically poor. Companies and battalions could fight well at the local level, but their success depended on practiced brigade and divisional structures above them. Those higher formations had to coordinate dispersed units, understand the campaign plan, and turn local resistance into an operational defense. Britain had also committed many experienced officers and resources to North Africa, Europe, and other theaters, leaving the Far Eastern command unable to convert unit-level quality into a coherent campaign.
