An outnumbered defence loses its experienced core

Numbers alone obscure the weakness of Malaya's defence: many units were understrength, inexperienced, and steadily losing officers and NCOs.

Notes

A simple troop-total comparison obscures the condition of the forces in Malaya. Nominal totals of about 86,000 Commonwealth personnel against roughly 70,000 troops in the Japanese 25th Army conceal around 15,000 rear-area personnel and very few full-strength defending units. Successive actions then depleted morale and the experienced leaders who made inexperienced units function. Junior officers normally rely on seasoned NCOs, but those leadership networks were especially fragile in newly raised formations. The resulting campaign was mobile jungle warfare between forces with very different levels of preparation. Both sides fielded tanks, though few were especially capable.
