Major-General of Marines as a reward for continued service

An additional Royal Marines title and stipend show how the Admiralty rewarded a senior officer without changing his operational duties.

Notes

While HMS Ocean underwent repairs at Malta, Collingwood received appointment as a Major-General of Marines. The title brought an annual stipend of £1,400 but no new duties alongside his naval command. The Admiralty used the appointment to reward an officer it wanted to keep in service. Rank, patronage, and compensation could overlap across the Georgian naval establishment in this way.
