Mahan belonged to the late nineteenth-century U.S. Navy as a working officer and institutional leader as well as an author. His father taught at West Point and preferred an Army career for him, while his mother supported his decision to enter the Navy. Mahan's career included three ship commands, promotion through the officer corps, and two periods leading the Naval War College after his mentor Stephen B. Luce left for sea duty. That institutional experience gave his historical writing a platform inside professional naval education.
