Mahan takes sea power to his audience

Mahan's religious vocabulary illustrates how a naval advocate connected sea power to the concerns of his intended readers.

Notes

Mahan's religious and cultural language connects sea power with concerns familiar to his American audience in 1897. Christianity and biblical ideas gave him a vocabulary through which to explain why naval power mattered. That rhetoric belongs to the assumptions of his intended readers. The example presents advocacy as the work of bringing an argument into an audience's existing conversation.
