Mahan's Civil War service and possible link to Farragut

Mahan served at Port Royal and belonged to a generation later admirals could have known, although a personal meeting with Farragut remains uncertain here.

Notes

Alfred Thayer Mahan served in the American Civil War and took part in the Battle of Port Royal. His career supplied another possible personal connection between that war and the officers who later led the US Navy. A meeting between Mahan and Farragut is suggested, but it is not established in this discussion. His possible presence at the Naval Academy in 1904 is also left unconfirmed. The comparison credits Mahan more for naval theory than for practical ship command.
