Magnetic mines turn coastal channels into wreck fields

An image of wreck-strewn East Coast channels conveys the immediate maritime danger created by the 1940 magnetic-mine campaign.

Notes

The book's photographs make the mine threat tangible. Shallow British East Coast channels were filled with half-submerged wrecks during the height of the magnetic-mine campaign. The Union-Castle liner Dunbar Castle was an early January 1940 casualty off North Foreland. The example shows how mine warfare could disrupt ordinary coastal movement and turn constrained shipping channels into persistent hazards.
