Magellan at Cebu: navigation secrecy and religious zeal

Beach's interpretation of Magellan's arrival at Cebu connects Portuguese trade secrecy with the explorer's growing conviction of divine purpose.

Notes

A familiar Malay trading vessel helped Magellan recognize that his westward voyage had reached the Far East. Portugal protected its trade monopoly by concealing navigational knowledge and using force against competing ships and traders. Beach interpreted Magellan's survival and arrival as encouraging a conviction that God had sent him to spread Christianity. In that reading, confidence in divine protection turned the navigator increasingly toward religious zeal. Triton carried three books on Magellan, and Beach's historical reading became part of his official account of the Philippine passage.
