Question

How do Magellan and Juan Sebastian Elcano compare as leaders?

Short answer

Magellan is judged the strongest available choice for Spain, though not an outstanding leader, while Elcano is described as determined.

Notes

Magellan is judged the strongest available leader the Spanish crown could send, while receiving a qualified assessment of his ability. Elcano is characterised chiefly by determination. The response does not provide a detailed comparison of their voyages or command decisions.
