Madagascar's ports and the logic behind Operation Ironclad

Madagascar mattered because its ports could support convoy protection and deter raiders in a difficult gap between Cape Town and the north.

Notes

Surface raiders operated around Madagascar while the Royal Navy lacked a convenient base between Cape Town and its northern Indian Ocean facilities. Cape Town was important but sat on the transit route and already supported convoy work farther west and south. Useful Malagasy ports could shorten the response path for escorts and deterrent units protecting nearby traffic. This geographic gap formed part of the strategic background to Operation Ironclad and linked the campaign directly to convoy protection.
