Mackensen exposes Germany's battlecruiser middle ground

The Mackensen class offers excellent range but a conservative mix of 28-knot speed and 13.8-inch guns as rivals move to 15-inch weapons.

Notes

Mackensen's projected 8,000-nautical-mile range at 14 knots suited commerce warfare, and its 28-knot speed could outpace Queen Elizabeth. The class nevertheless carried eight 13.8-inch guns after Britain had already committed to 15-inch weapons, making a design laid down in 1914 look conservative. That caution contrasts with repeated British jumps from Dreadnought to Invincible, the 13.5-inch Orion class, and the fast Queen Elizabeth class. Germany kept refining a familiar formula instead of forcing its rival to answer a new technological or strategic challenge. Because Mackensen was too large and costly to treat as an expendable raider, its compromise of range, speed, firepower, and protection lacked a clear German mission.
