Larger destroyers still brought limited range and new machinery

An enlarged follow-on design carried stronger torpedo armament, yet its speed, range, machinery variety, and four-ship order limited the improvement.

Notes

The follow-on ships were presented as enlarged and improved versions of the Ukrainets group, although they were slower. Their outfit included more machine guns and three 17.7-inch torpedo tubes; the comparison with the earlier class's tubes is explicitly uncertain. French Normand boilers added another machinery origin after German, British, Russian, and Swiss choices, complicating maintenance and training. Triple-expansion engines produced 7,300 indicated horsepower for 25 knots. Their best-case range was about 2,400 nautical miles at 12 knots, which was disappointing for a roughly 700-ton design that might have benefited from the lessons of the Tsushima voyage. Only four were built, with the last completed in September 1907.
