Machinery commonality and the Adelaide caveat

Boilers, turbine sets, guns, torpedoes, and HMAS Adelaide's unusual service history shape a design that ultimately uses British hull assumptions.

Notes

The Chatham and Birmingham groups are compared through their machinery, performance, ammunition supply, and original armament. HMAS Adelaide is useful because she lasted longest and served in World War II. Her Australian construction, late completion, and depth-charge fittings make her an awkward baseline for the British survivors, however. The rebuild must start from stripped hulls without their original six-inch guns rather than from Adelaide's wartime configuration.
