Japanese snipers and machine guns initially slowed the American advance by exploiting Makin's limited cover. Repeated banzai charges then exposed the garrison to Raiders who could fight from defensive positions. Troops moving across the island had little protection, while even sparse cover favored anyone who stayed in place. The charges therefore surrendered the advantage that Japanese weapons and terrain had created.
