Machine guns controlled ground through overlapping arcs

Prearranged fields of fire let gun teams cover an approach even after they lost sight of the attackers.

Notes

Machine-gun teams could establish fixed arcs and sweep at a predetermined rate when an attack began. Stops marked the limits of the barrel's traverse so the pattern could continue when smoke and confusion obscured the view. Overlapping streams of fire created a beaten area across the approach. Infantry movement therefore depended on suppressing the gun positions long enough to cross that ground. Artillery curtains and barrages developed around this requirement.
