MAC ships bridge the gap to true escort carriers

Merchant aircraft carriers offered a small air group and practical conversion lessons while purpose-built escort carriers were still arriving.

Notes

Merchant aircraft carriers provided an interim solution while purpose-built and converted escort carriers entered service in numbers. The earliest examples displaced about 8,000 tons, made roughly 12 knots, and operated only four aircraft, yet some still included a hangar and lift. Their small air groups could maintain useful convoy patrols and prove the practical value of aviation at sea. British changes for Arctic weather and fuel handling also show that a successful conversion required adaptation to its operating environment, not merely the addition of a flight deck.
